4 Crazy time-projects redefined time measurements

Get inspired by four time projects that redefined time measurements:

1. Time well-spent by Tristan Harris

2. Deep Time by The Human Adaption Institute

3. Internet Time by Swatch

4. 10'000-year clock by Jeff Bezos

1. Time well-spent by Tristan Harris

Tristan Harris left Google in 2016 to start Time Well Spent, a nonprofit aimed at combating the digital attention crisis caused by manipulation techniques delivered through smartphones. Mark Zuckerberg co-opted the initiative and used the term “time well spent” in a post to promote Facebook. Joe Edelman, who coined the term with Harris, wrote two essays on Medium, calling for profound changes to how software is made in order to address users’ sense of meaning. Edelman suggests that designers should ask what their users’ actual values are and reflect on how they can let users live out their values through software. This approach is more deeply considered than what Facebook has announced so far.

2. Deep Time by The Human Adaption Institute

Explorer Christian Clot directed and participated in the Deep Time project, where he and 14 others spent 40 days inside a cave in France without any way to tell time. The purpose of the project was to study how the human mind adapts to a new environment and how groups can synchronize without the use of external timekeeping devices. Clot and his team followed their internal rhythms and discovered they were running on cycles of 32 hours instead of the typical 24-hour day cycle. They also learned the importance of spending time with others and making time for themselves.

3. Internet Time by Swatch

Swatch Internet Time is a time-telling system that divides a day into 1000 equal units, or ".beats." Swatch designed the system in 1998 as a marketing gimmick and a method of global coordination over the internet. Internet Time uses an @ symbol before the current .beat, which ranges from @000 to @999 each day. Although there is no way to tell the current local time in .beats, it is possible to convert a given number of .beats into standard time formats. Some video games, such as Sega Rally 2 and Phantasy Star Online, have incorporated Internet Time support. Internet Time uses the timezone of Biel, Switzerland, as its reference time.

4. 10'000-year clock by Jeff Bezos

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has unveiled a video of a 10,000-year clock being built inside a mountain in West Texas. The clock, which is 500 feet tall and powered by the Earth's thermal cycles, is designed to be a symbol of long-term thinking. The clock ticks only once a year, with the century hand moving once every 100 years and the cuckoo appearing every millennium. The clock has been worked on for nearly 30 years and will have five room-sized anniversary chambers carved into the mountain. Bezos has invested $42m in the project, which is being built by the Long Now Foundation.
